Congratulations to Michael Foster who successfully passed his prelim on Monday, Aug. 30. Members of his committee were: Professors Peter Golato (French & SLATE, committee chair), Andrea Golato (German & SLATE, director of research), Laurence Mall (French), and Numa Markee (Linguistics & SLATE). The title of Michael's doctoral dissertation is: "Third Position Responses in French Native and Non-Native Speaker Interaction."
Annie Tremblay received the Arnold O. Beckman Research Award (2010-2011) for the following project: "Native and non-native French listeners segmentation of liaison-initial words: Assessing the role of acoustic-phonetic, phonemic, morphological, and syntactic information".
Le chanteur français Eric VINCENT (http://www.eric-vincent.com) donnera des concerts à Chicago les 12 et 14 Octobre prochain. Eric Vincent vit sur une péniche au cœur de Paris. Rime riche, verbe recherché, musiques métisses hautes en couleurs et en rythmes. Il porte la langue française aux quatre coins du monde.
Kate Coughlin and Annie Tremblay will give the following talk at the PhonLex 2010 Conference (Sept. 8-10) in Toulouse, France: "The role of prosodic constituents in the native and non-native segmentation of French speech".
Marcus Keller gave an invited lecture, entitled "The Turk as Ally and Combattant in the Symbolic Civil Wars of France," at the international conference " 'Turks' - The Role of Islamic Culture in Early Modern European Literature" at the University of Copenhagen (August 27-28).
